One Point Perspective

Stanley Kubrick uses one point perspective a lot.

Todorov’s Narrative Theory

Tzvetan Todorov:

He had a view that narrative has a primary function which is to solve a problem.

The characters also pass through a series of linear events in chronological order.

Narratives have a cause and effect format.

Equilibrium,  balance/ stable. The narrative starts with equilibrium (a stable situation)

Disequilibrium,  a quest to solve. The narrative moves to a climax/ confrontation.

New Equilibrium,  a resolution.

SPOILERS A HEAD FOR BLACK PANTHER!!!!!!!!!!

In Black Panther, Black Panther starts off being crowned King and is living a fairly stable life (equilibrium). Until, a forgotten relative comes to his kingdom and takes the throne away and causes a confrontation (disequilibrium). Black Panther comes back defeats and takes back his throne which restores equilibrium (new equilibrium).

Casting

Jina Jay is a very famous casting director. She has worked on films and shows such as: Rogue One, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Lovely Bones, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Black Mirror and The Night Manager. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0419605/

A casting director selects actors who fit the description of the characters needed in the film. They have to look at different auditions and choose who they think will be the best. They then take the selection to the director so that the director can choose. Once the parts are cast, the Casting Director negotiates fees and contracts for the actors, and acts as a liaison between the director, the actors and their agents.

If I had free range on who I cast who would I choose?

In my Horror Michaela kindly accepted to act for me but if I had free range I would have used someone older and professionally trained. I would do this because Michaela tried her best but isn’t very comfortable on camera and the quality of acting can make and break the film as they are the centre of attention. The downside is that I have to actually pay the actors anddddd working in a hairdressers cleaning dirty people’s dirty hair doesn’t pay very well sooooo we improvise over here in ESC! Genre Codes & Conventions

Sci-Fi

This scene is typical Sci-Fi as the set design is very sterile and modern looking, the white suits and the silver is very futuristic. The contact lenses make the human actors seem alien which is another code and convention for Sci-Fi films. This film is set in the future which is another code and convention of Sci-Fi films.

Horror

The music used for this film is stereotypical, it is used to tell the audience something bad is going to happen or is happening. The vibrant clashing colours of the location make the audience scared as the colours blur to become un-natural and emphasise the wrongness of the scene.

Comedy

In this scene violence is used to make the audience laugh as it makes the character look ignorant and stupid. Simple one liners are also used to make the audience laugh. The scene in general is very light hearted and the light is bright. The scene also uses cliche sound effects to make the movements of Deadpool’s head seem comical.

Action

This film is very tense the music and the use of silence builds up the tension, it lets the audience know something bad is going to happen. It has the stereotypical violent action these films have. the black suits provide a government vibe which is also stereotypical of action films.

Romance

This scene is very warm and bubbly you have the tension between the two in love characters and the camera shows this by focusing on their faces specifically. There is hopeful music playing which can be perceived a the relationship blossoming.

Home Camera Work

The cup pictures are based on what this YouTuber did to achieve a cinematic look. Below are my tries

I first tried it with a sauce pan and white paper on the floor to get a gradient but it didn’t really work I didn’t have a big enough saucepan to block out the background.

This picture turned out the best.

I then tried it with a different glass to see if I could get a different effect. I then used a pillow as it provided a bigger black background but to achieve the blur it didn’t really work.

I then moved to the piano which is black with paper on the floor to try and achieve the gradient, this worked out better.

I then decided to take pictures of my cat (Annie). I wasn’t really focusing on the composition of the shot I just wanted to take pictures of my cat- as you do!!

Blurred Background

The sensor is the brain. It is in the camera body.

The lense is the eye. The sense is made of glass. The sense can be detachable. Measured in mm.

  • Prime lense- it is fixed you cannot zoom in and out
  • Zoom- you can zoom.

Paparazzi use long lenses so that they can get detailed shots from long distances.

Lens settings:

  • Aperture– size of the opening the lets in a certain amount of light. Aperture translated from French means open.
  • Shutter speed-quickness of allowing light in. Why? To get things in focus moving a long shutter speed would cause the picture to be blurry.

Sensor setting

  • ISO: How sensitive it is to the light. The higher the number the more sensitive.

Depth of field, the range or distance that is in focus.

Why not have it on the largest aperture and shutter speed? Not everything will be in focus if you want more of a focused and detailed picture you need less light.

How to make a blurred background:

  1. camera lens and sensor size
  2. camera and talent- a short distance between talent and camera, long distance between talent and background.
  3. Zoom

Basic Settings:

  • Shutter speed= 50
  • Lowest aperture possible
  • ISO- don’t go too high as it becomes grainy

Over the two days of taking pictures and playing around with the settings I realised you don’t have to stick to the basic settings you can (and eventually have to) change the setting so that they suit the environment you are in. On day one I was really struggling to take the type of pictures I wanted one reason was because I had my ISO wayyyyy too high and I wasn’t getting the basic idea of the talent being close and the background further away. On the second day there was a massive improvement and I started to play around with the settings to see what looked best.

The second day was a lot sunnier which meant that we had to change the settings on the camera other wise the picture becomes too exposed, it was really interesting to then go inside and realise that there wasn’t enough light getting into the sense so I had to change the settings again.

I really enjoyed taking pictures with one object focused and then focusing on something else, hence why there are a lot of the same pictures with different focuses.

This was a really good exercise as I now have more knowledge on how to use my camera properly and to make a scene more lit up as before I found all the different settings really daunting.

Jay-Z and Dean Baquet Analysis

This interview is actually called a conversation which gives it a more relaxed tone, something that correlates to this is that the interview seems very relaxed and the camera focuses on the faces of Dean and Jay-Z. The camera also zooms in on the hands. The style of the interview is very simplistic, this  creates a more serious tone.

This shot isn’t dense. The blurred background creates a very cinematic and dramatic feel.

Most of the camera shots are hand held and not on a tripod this allows the camera men to get many shots. The walk in shot at the beginning is a good way to start the interview as it shows the off the room and how the interviewer and interviewee act together. The whole interview has a natural flow.

Heres a floor plan of what the room might have been set up as:
